Biography

RockBoar.com Picture

Guided by the late Manfred Weissleder, proprietor of the city’s Star Club, Hamburg teenagers Achim Reichel (guitar/vocals), guitarist Volker Reinhold was replaced by Hajo Kreuzfeld in 1961, Herbert Hildebrandt ( bass/vocals) and Dieter Sadlowsky who made way for Reinhard Tarrach (drums) modelled their group on the British beat image in 1962.[1]

Among their one of first recordings was a version of "The Hippy Hippy Shake", and they often shared bills with Tony Sheridan, Cliff Bennett, the Beatles and Kingsize Taylor. Later, morale was boosted by a successful fortnight’s residency in Liverpool’s The Cavern club, and appearances on UK television.[1]

When, in 1966, Reichel had to join the army, the band’s line-up changed permanently, with the addition of singer Frank Dostal and Bernd Schulz on keyboards. Following several personnel changes after Hildebrandt had taken a back seat role as producer and composer and general éminence grise.[1]

The new line-up comprised; Edna Bejerano, Frank Mille (guitar), Kurt ‘Zappo’ Luengen (bass) and Herbert Bornholdt (drums). In 1970 "The Witch", a 1969 single b-side to "Geraldine", charted. The re-recorded version became a hit in the UK and made the Top 10. The Rattles also became the first German band to enter the US Hot 100.[1]

"The Witch" eventually sold over one million copies. Rosetta Stone released a gothic rock cover of "The Witch" in the 1990s. The Norwegian psychedelic hard rock band Motorpsycho covered the song during 1999 and 2000.[2]

The band, however, were unable to secure a lasting place in foreign hearts, and soon returned to the German orbit of engagements where they are remembered as one of the leading beat groups of the era. They officially disbanded in 1977.[1]

Reichel has led a highly successful career as a singer-songwriter for the past three decades and the band reunited in 1988 (with Hildebrandt and Tarrach), playing the oldies circuit in Europe. In 1997 they helped launch the Star-Club musical Pico, the story of the forgotten 60s Hamburg cult figure Salvatore Martens.[1]
