John Joseph Wardle , known by the stage name Jah Wobble, is an English bass guitarist, singer, poet and composer. He became known to a wider audience as the original bass player in Public Image Ltd (PiL) in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but left the band after two albums.
Jah Wobble was named by a drunken Sid Vicious, who also loaned him his first bass guitar.
Wobble joined John Lydon in Public Image Limited, with his distinctive low-end bass providing the backbone and heartbeat of the band. Wobble has since collaborated with a wide variety of musicians, including original Can members Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit, Brian Eno, Ginger Baker, Massive Attack, Bill Laswell, Harold Budd, Sinead O’Connor, Primal Scream, Natacha Atlas, Björk, and his output has spanned a number of musical genres including avant-garde jazz-rock, folk, fusion, or ambient. In the late 90s he set up his own independent label, 30 Hertz Records.
